
FLY BUY: United Airlines “triggered the first major ticket sale for autumn by lowering prices on hundreds of leisure fares” reports The Wall Street Journal today, noting that American, Delta and Continental are matching fares. Cheaptickets.com says you can fly United roundtrip Denver to: Atlanta, $273; Boston, $303; Las Vegas, $122; Minneapolis, $242; Los Angeles, $242. Taxes and fees extra. Fourteen-day advance purchase, with Tuesday and Wednesday snagging the lowest fares. Must book by Aug. 18 for travel Aug. 22 through Nov. 16 (one week before Thanksgiving).
FORECLOSURES: The rate of foreclosures is moderating, but the Denver/Boulder/Greeley metro area still ranked fourth in the nation for the second quarter, according to RealtyTrac’s report out today. One household out of every 128 here were in some state of foreclosure (compared to one every 105 in the first quarter). Salt Lake City joined the top ten in the second quarter with one of every 165 households; raking 12th was Colorado Springs with one of every 175 (compared to one of every 155 in the first quarter.) Texas has four of the top 10 on the list: Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio.
FORT PAPER: Fort Collins is getting a new weekly alternative paper, The Rocky Mountain Chronicle, scheduled to debut Oct. 16. Vanessa Martinez, formerly managing editor of the Colorado Springs Independent, is helping launch the new paper, which is hiring for a number of positions. The Independent, meanwhile, is offering a $1,000 finder’s fee to help fill the managing editor’s job.
THE KICKER: Liza Siegel, author of “Suite Success: The Psychologist from ‘The Apprentice’ Reveals What it Really takes to Excel in the Boardroom and in Life,” will be at the Tattered Cover Lodo on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Siegel, we’re told, “is in charge of screening, testing and interviewing applicants – as well as escorting ‘fired’ contestants from the set.”
