DID YOU KNOW?
Denver’s Barnum neighborhood
P.T. Barnum of Barnum & Bailey Circus (above) invested in the subdivision, which now bears his name, in 1878. The Barnum neighborhood – with boundaries from West Sixth Avenue to West Alameda Avenue and from Federal Boulevard to Sheridan Boulevard – has several historic buildings, including the 1910 Bowman house at King Street and West Fourth Avenue, and the 1890s retail building at West First Avenue and Hooker Street.
Originally, the neighborhood was separately incorporated with its own post office from Feb. 5, 1892, to June 30, 1901. After being disappointed in its development because of lack of water and other necessities, Barnum transferred the property to his daughter, Helen. She and her husband, William Buchtel, developed the area, which was later annexed into Denver.

A community health screening on Aug. 31 offers Loveland-area residents a chance to have a checkup on their heart’s health.
The event, sponsored by the HeartAware program of Poudre Valley Health System’s Heart Center of the Rockies, provides a blood test for cholesterol analysis, a blood-pressure check and a discussion about the results.
The screening will take place from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Loveland Public Library, 300 N. Adams.
Appointments are necessary; call the PVHS Aspen Club, 970-495-8560 to schedule a time.

GRAND JUNCTION
Visit to Mesa Lakes no longer free
Some visitors to Mesa Lakes on the Grand Mesa have been surprised this summer by a new $5 entrance fee to the popular fishing lakes.
Recreation Resource Management, the concessionaire that is overseeing the lakes, began charging the fee for upkeep after the U.S. Forest Service made more than $3 million worth of improvements. Roads have been widened and paved. Paved trails, evaporative toilets and daily trash collection have been added.
The fee applies to Sunset Reservoir, Glacier Springs and Jumbo Lake.
