Fort Lewis, Metro St. top RMAC soccer polls
Fort Lewis, the defending NCAA Division II men’s soccer champion, was voted to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title in a poll of the league’s seven coaches, it was announced Tuesday.
The Skyhawks, who were also ranked No. 1 in Division II in the NSCAA national rankings, last year became the first RMAC team to win a national title. John Cunliffe, the 2004 and 2005 player of the year, was chosen to become the first to win the award three times.
Metro State was picked to finish second, and the Road- runners’ Brad Gorham was voted preseason freshman of the year. Colorado Mines, tabbed No. 3 in the RMAC and No. 12 in the national NSCAA poll, has the defensive player of the year in Kevin Galloway, a 6-foot-7 goalkeeper.
The Metro State women’s team – the defending RMAC regular-season and tournament champion – was voted to again win the conference in a poll of the league’s nine coaches. Roadrunners senior forward Kylee Hanavan was chosen to repeat as player of the year. Metro State was also picked No. 5 in the NSCAA national poll.
Regis was voted to finish No. 2 in the RMAC and No. 12 nationally, with Rangers defenseman Tara Kirkpatrick tabbed the defensive player of the year and Kelly Labor the freshman of the year.
