Washington – Christian Gomez scored in the 56th minute to lift D.C. United to a 1-1 tie with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday afternoon.
Kyle Beckerman scored on Nicolas Hernandez’s corner kick for Colorado, and Joe Cannon’s nine saves helped the Rapids (9-8-5) become the first MLS team to escape the season series against D.C. without a loss.
United (13-2-8) had a few chances to win the game late, with Jaime Moreno coming closest to giving United its first victory in four matches. But his one-time blast struck the crossbar in the 58th minute, and another mid-range shot was denied by Cannon’s sprawling save in the 79th.
Moreno did assist on Gomez’s goal, eluding several defenders before slipping the ball left to his teammate, who blasted a low shot off Cannon and inside the left post.
Gomez would later leave the game with a hamstring strain.
While Colorado did its best to kill off the final minutes, United pressed until the very end.
United has gone more than a month without a league win.
Colorado travels to Chicago this week for its first visit to Toyota Park as the Rapids look to gain ground on Houston and Dallas in the Western Conference.
