Covington, Ind. – A van struck bicyclists riding to raise money for families of police officers killed in the line of duty, leaving a state trooper and a retired police chief dead and injuring another cyclist.
The van, which was providing support to the bicyclists and was marked with a large banner that read “Caution Cyclists Ahead,” spun into the group after being hit by a box truck on Indiana 63 near the Illinois state line, police said.
Killed were state police Lt. Gary Dudley, who was believed to be 52, and retired Lake County sheriff’s Chief Gary Martin, 63.
The injured cyclist, retired Indianapolis police Officer Spencer Moore, was airlifted to an Illinois hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Tuesday night, state police Sgt. Joe Watts said.
The drivers of the two vehicles were treated at a hospital and released.
Watts said it could take several weeks before officials decide whether to file any charges.
He also said the charity event would go on. “I am sure the officers would not want it any other way,” he said.
