Silverton Mountain has acquired 164 acres of new terrain adjacent to its ski-area boundaries, making it the sixth-largest ski resort in the state.
The purchase brings Silverton’s holdings to 1,819 acres of expert-only skiing.
The price was not disclosed.
“Having this property really opens up the gates for the ski area to run at an optimal level,” said Aaron Brill, who owns Silverton with his wife, Jen.
The Brills bought the land from Aspen businessman Jim Jackson, who filed a civil suit against them in 2004. Jackson claimed that the couple allowed employees and skiers to trespass on his adjacent mining claims and that the ski area’s avalanche-control work injured his property rights. In March, a district judge ruled against the Brills and ordered them to pay Jackson $1 in damages.
The southwest Colorado ski area will open for the season Nov. 23. Through Sept. 15, Silverton is selling an unguided season pass for $999. Guided-skiing prices range from $99 to $129 per day, depending on the month.
