The ever-lighter trend in outdoor gear has reached new levels with the Pak-Lite LED flashlight. Pak-Lite’s pair of LED lights is packed into a featherweight gizmo the size of two dice that click onto a 9-volt battery. The Pak-Lite was conceived six years ago by 15-year-old Ben Henry, whose brother was lamenting the weight of flashlight batteries he needed to carry for a planned traverse of the 2,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail. The basic Pak-Lite ($13) burns for 600 hours on a single battery, and the new super Pak-Lite ($25) burns for 1,200 hours and throws a beam that can be seen a mile away. The LED lights, which glow in the dark when turned off, eliminating fumbling searches through dark backpacks, have drawn the eye of the U.S. military, which outfitted all its pilots with a Pak-Lite in their emergency kits.
