Flying solo
ART|Two of Denver’s most talked-about young artists – Jenny Morgan (artwork at right) and Colin Livingston (artwork below) – will be featured in solo exhibitions opening Saturday. The two graduated from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in 2003 and 2001 respectively, but they take quite different approaches to their work. Morgan reinterprets the figure and Livingston draws on mass media and popular culture.|Saturday through Oct. 7, opening reception, 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday|Plus Gallery, 2350 Lawrence St.; free; 303-296-0927 or plusgallery.com.

The Week
Western lit
READINGS|The West boasts one of the richest literary legacies of any region in the country. The University of Colorado at Boulder’s Center of the American West will celebrate that heritage with “Words to Stir the Soul: Readings from the American West.” A dozen faculty members and community members will read excerpts – none more than five minutes in length – from their favorite Western-related literature.|7 p.m. Tuesday|Old Main Chapel, CU-Boulder campus; free; 303-492-4879 or centerwest.org.
American Idols Live!
TV-MADE POP|Yes, the most recent “American Idol” winner, Taylor Hicks (below), will perform at this live presentation of the hit TV show at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday. And yes, Pop Tarts really is the presenting sponsor. (Fitting, right?) Also scheduled to perform at the big pop concert: Katharine McPhee, Elliott Yamin, local crooner Ace Young, Bucky Covington, Kellie Pickler, Lisa Tucker, Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett and Mandisa.|7 p.m., Tuesday.|Pepsi Center; $34.50-$64.50; ticketmaster.com, 303-830-8497
Dance … and then Gossip!
DANCE-ROCK|It’s impossible to capture the excitement of a Gossip show in words, because it’s the kind of experience that has to be sweated out. The Portland band is touring with Erase Errata (whose new album is tremendously cool) and they’ll play Rock Island on Tuesday in a special all-ages show with Mika Miko opening. |8:30 p.m., Tuesday.|Rock Island; $12; larimerlounge.com
His brother’s keeper
FILM|The Denver Public Library continues its Truth & Lives series with “Brother’s Keeper,” directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofky, the insightful duo that made “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster” and “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills.” In this 1992, documentary, they turned their attention to the Ward brothers of upstate New York. The insular world of the dairy-farming “Ward Boys” was pried open when Delbert, 59, was charged with the murder of brother Bill, 64. “Brother’s Keeper” remains a powerfully tender film about family, community and miscarriages of justice.|6:30 p.m., Tuesday.| Central Library, 10 W. 14th Avenue Pkwy, Level B2 Conference Center; free; 720-865-1111
