Police are lassoing speeders on the just-completed T-REX section of Interstate 25 – dozens of speeding tickets were written Wednesday in a two-hour span.
Denver police wrote 49 tickets between 6 and 8 a.m. and everyone ticketed was more than 20 mph over the speed limit, spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
“If we let these people travel these speeds, we are going to be looking at some serious accidents,” Jackson said.
The speed limit on I-25 through Denver is 55 mph.
Now that the cones are gone – Transportation Expansion Project construction officially ended last week – drivers are pushing the pedal to the metal.
One driver was clocked at 88 mph Wednesday, Jackson said. Drivers ticketed face 6-point violations, and all will have to appear before a judge. They face fines that could climb to hundreds of dollars, Jackson said.
Greenwood Village police have been trying to slow down speeders in their section – from East Easter Avenue to East Belleview Avenue – for the past 16 months, said Lt. Dave Fisher. Construction through that stretch – where the speed limit is 65 mph – wrapped up before the Denver section.
Intense traffic volumes and high speeds are a dangerous combination, Fisher said.
“Our guys have tried to hit it hard, but it’s really unsafe to try and work it,” Fisher said. “It is definitely a concern to go from a standing stop to catching someone going over 80 mph.”
