A look at some of the state ballot items before voters in the 2006 elections:
Eminent domain. Voters in at least 10 states – California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon and South Carolina – will consider ballot measures that would bar the government from taking private property for another private use.
Same-sex marriage. Voters in eight states – Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin – will vote on proposed amendments to state constitutions that would ban same- sex marriage, a step already taken by 20 states. Colorado voters also will consider a rival measure that would legalize civil unions even if the marriage ban passes.
Abortion. South Dakotans will vote to uphold or quash the state Legislature’s bill that would outlaw virtually all abortions. In California and Oregon, voters will consider measures that would require parental notification before minors could get an abortion.
Minimum wage. Proposals to raise the minimum wage are expected to be on the ballots in Colorado, Arizona, Missouri, Montana and Nevada.
Smoking. At least six states – Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Nevada and South Dakota – will consider smoking-related issues, including banning or restricting smoking in public places and increasing tobacco taxes.
