A Thornton man died after his stepfather stabbed him in the chest during a fight and frantic efforts to get him to a hospital ended in a car crash, authorities say.

The 60-year-old stepfather was taken to a hospital Friday evening following the fight and was treated for a head wound before he was booked into jail for investigation of murder, said Matt Barnes, Thornton police spokesman.

The fight happened about 5:30 p.m. Friday in the parking area of an apartment complex at 4211 E. 100th Ave., Barnes said.

It is unclear what started the fight between the 34-year-old man and his stepfather, Barnes said. After the stepson was stabbed, a friend helped him into his car.

The friend was speeding to the hospital when he ran a red light at the intersection of East 98th Avenue and North Washington Street and his car was struck near the right fender by another car, Barnes said.

The friend pulled over and tried to flag down motorists for help. The victim was removed from the car and someone tried to revive him.

The driver of the other car involved in the accident fled the scene and has not been identified, Barnes said.

The stepfather was arrested and taken to North Suburban Hospital with a head injury.
