The University of Colorado women’s soccer team remained undefeated at home Sunday, defeating No. 23 Mississippi 3-1 to win the Colorado Soccer Classic in Boulder.

Colorado (3-0-1) has the best start in the program’s 11-year history.

Alex Cousins led the Buffaloes with a goal and assist. Cousins was fouled after making a move toward goal in the 25th minute, and her subsequent penalty kick goal put CU ahead 1-0. In the 35th minute, Cousins served a cross to freshman Caitlin Choun, who scored against Mississippi goalie Ann Shelton to give CU a 3-0 advantage.

Also, Denver defeated Clemson 1-0 earlier in the day.

Adams State senior Sara Lyles scored twice in Golden, tying a school record for career goals, but the Grizzlies lost to Colorado Mines 3-2 in overtime. Kayla Mitchell scored the winning goal for Mines. Lyles has 12 goals in her Adams State career.

Rapids’ celebration upsets Real Salt Lake owner

Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts plans to ask Major League Soccer to review the Rapids’ celebration after Colorado’s 1-0 victory that prompted Checketts to argue face-to-face with Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni.

Checketts and Mastroeni were in a heated exchange on the field Saturday night when former Salt Lake player Clint Mathis stepped between the two and other Colorado players led Mastroeni to the locker room.

Checketts was irate after the game and issued a statement saying the Rapids taunted Salt Lake fans verbally and with the Rocky Mountain Cup trophy, which goes to the winner of the series between the two MLS clubs.
