You can’t rattle Larry Zimmer.
In his 33rd year broadcasting University of Colorado games, “Zim” has seen it all, including back-to-back losses to Drake, so last Saturday’s upset 19-10 loss to Division I-AA Montana State, while disappointing, wasn’t the end of the world.
“It might be a wake-up call,” said Zimmer, who will be in the KOA 850-AM radio booth with play-by-play man Mark Johnson for Saturday’s CU-Colorado State matchup at Invesco Field at Mile High (3 p.m., CSTV).
“You only have to go back to 2001 when they lost to Fresno State at home in the first game of the year. They came back and beat CSU 41-14 and went on to win the Big 12 championship. They can recover from it.”
He’s still a big supporter of new Buffs coach Dan Hawkins. “I can’t imagine him not being successful. He’s a bundle of energy. He’s a relentless recruiter, and he’s got the right attitude.”
Broncos hymnal
The Mile High Church of the Broncos Devotional is back in session on Sunday.
The game against the St. Louis Rams begins at 11 a.m. (KCNC- Channel 4) but the pre-game services start at 10:30 a.m. with “Countdown to Kickoff,” beginning its ninth season with a new host, ex-Bronco Reggie Rivers. Also new: Kathy Lee, one-third of the morning team on “Lewis & Floorwax,” “spends time with a Broncos player off the field.” I’m unsure how specific this will be.
Then it’s Chicago and Green Bay (2 p.m., KDVR-Channel 31).
When the Broncos game ends, it’s time for Channel 4’s “All Access,” explaining what you watched for three hours.
By then it will be coming up time for “Sunday Night Football,” matching the brothers Manning as Indianapolis takes on the New York Giants (6 p.m., KUSA-Channel 9).
Costa spreads out
Dino Costa, feisty host of “Raw Sports” on FSN Rocky Mountain, launching a new gig, taking his radio show on the road to casino hop in Central City (11 a.m. Fridays, KRCN 1060-AM).
It’s a little about sports and a lot about selling Central City. “To the best of my knowledge they’ll put me into promoting ambience and things they’ve got going on.”
This is different from “Raw Sports” (10:30 p.m. Sundays and 10 p.m. Thursdays), where he bows to no man and tells local sports nuts what he thinks.
Around the dial
CU-CSU so big locally that FSNRM devotes an hour-long pre-game show to it from the Inves- co Field parking lot, starting at 2 p.m. … As always, Dick Enberg will be at center court for the U.S. Open tennis men’s finals (2 p.m. Sunday, KCNC-Channel 4) … Ex-Broncos lineman Mark Schlereth joins Scott Hastings and Alfred Williams as NFL analyst on KKFN 950-AM today … Quotable: “It’s only devastating if you let it be that way. ” CU coach Dan Hawkins
