NEW YORK – People aren’t exactly pirouetting in the streets of Manhattan, but you can say that a dance-inspired movement has hit the runways for spring 2007.

Both Michael Kors and Vera Wang referenced dance in their program notes, and in Kors’ case particularly, the leotard tops, jersey wrap skirts and rehearsal sweaters brought back memories of long lessons at the barre.

Kors showed matte jersey skirts topped with a camisole and cardigan, leggings and wrap shirts, kimono shifts and other clothes that look great on long, lithe bodies.

“It’s a dance moment in pop culture, with everything from Madonna on tour to

‘Chorus Line’ opening this fall,” Kors said backstage after his show. “And let’s be honest, there’s the guilty pleasure of ‘Dancing with the Stars.”

” I’ll dress the dancers but you won’t see me dancing,” he promised.

As for Vera Wang, she said in her program notes that the collection “narrates the romance of the dance life … exploring the emotionally charged space of the geisha’s wardrobe and the ballerina’s rehearsal layers.”

Her models walked in golden ballet slippers and such outfits as sleeveless “warm-up” sweaters worn over dance tunics or short “tutu” skirts.

At Calvin Klein, designer Franciso Costa showed clothes that could be worn by a dancer, soft silhouettes of ivory organza veils over tank dresses, navy draped jersey dresses and pleated organza dresses with a weightless, airy feel. The models all had high ponytails and glassy expressions. “They look like clones; it’ scary,” said one guest. Or just ethereal.

Zac Posen’s parade on Thursday was more about glamour, from silvery draped dresses to sexy cowl-necked and backed gowns. Several styles had silk fringe that swayed as the models walked.

It’s a season in which there will be as many styles to choose from as there are designers showing.
