“Adopt a Beef” program

The Community Assistance Network in Kiowa provides food and other basic necessities to about 50 families and individuals each month.

The network started an “Adopt a Beef” program to provide meat to a food bank for those families. Cattle are raised on the outskirts of Kiowa, and “adoptions” cover the purchase cost, feed and processing of the beef.

Beef from one cow costs the Food Bank of the Rockies about $800 through the program, while the retail value of the same amount of meat would be several thousand dollars.

The program is supported by 17 churches in the area, although it’s not government- or church- sponsored. Cattle adoptions can be done by individuals or groups. Smaller donations can be dropped off at the CAN Thrift Store in Kiowa.

Those who participate in Adopt a Beef are given certificates to reflect a tax-deductible donation.

REGIONAL NOTES

LAKEWOOD

Petitions seek vote on land swap

Petitions seeking an election on a parkland swap approved unanimously in July by the Lakewood City Council have been filed with the city clerk.

City Clerk Margy Greer is reviewing the petitions, submitted Sept. 8, to determine if there are the required 2,687 valid signatures.

Petitioners object to the ordinance that would allow the city to trade 22 acres of land in Iron Spring Park for 22 acres of privately owned land in Rooney Valley. The private land would permit a buffer between homes in Green Mountain Village and a planned residential project.

Greer said Wednesday that the ordinance is suspended and that she has until Sept. 28 to give the council a preliminary report and Oct. 9 for a final.

The council then can vote to overturn the ordinance or call for a special election, which must be held between Nov. 14 and Jan. 2.
