In the course of eight days and more than 50 miles of up-and-down hiking through the wilds of central Alaska, Lee Lawson twice fell into rivers and returned to his home in Centennial with all the aches and pains that might be expected of a 70-year-old on his first Dall sheep hunt.

But Lawson also brought back something else: A sheep whose horns measured 14 1/2 inches at the base and 37 1/2 inches in length. More than a full curl, the trophy was one of the largest ever for outfitter Lee Cobb in more than 30 years of guiding.

Lawson trained more than a year for what he calls his “hunt of a lifetime.” He figures the aches and pains will go away any day now.
