Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club moved closer to defending his Colorado Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship after his second-round 75 put him at 144 for a three-shot lead at the Country Club at Castle Pines.

Irwin is seeking his third Mid-Amateur title in four years after winning in 2003 and 2005. But his 3-over-par 75 opened the door for several others in today’s final round.

Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club, the 1995 champion, shot a second-round 72 to move up to 147, tied with Scott Mendelsohn of South Suburban and Matt Strong of Wellshire Golf Club.

Jim Doidge of Pueblo Country Club and Michael Harrington of Kissing Camels Club shot 75s for two-round totals of 148.

AFA water polo takes two at East Meets West

The 18th-ranked Air Force men’s water polo team earned two victories in the East Meets West Tournament at the Cadet Natatorium on the academy grounds.

The Falcons got a 14-3 win over Western Water Polo Association rival La Verne and a 16-2 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Air Force improved to 6-4, 4-0 in the WWPA.
