Red Bulls 1, Crew 0 at East Rutherford, N.J.: Sixteen-year-old Jozy Altidore scored his first goal in his second MLS game, giving New York a victory over Columbus, which boosts the Red Bulls’ playoff chances.

Altidore, who had only played nine minutes this season because of his high school commitments while in the U.S. under-17 national team’s residency program, entered the game in the 74th minute and scored in the 83rd with a 28-yard blast through the hands of Crew goalie Bill Gaudette.

The win gave New York 32 points and pulled it within one point of Kansas City for the fourth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. The Red Bulls have five games remaining, one more than the Wizards.

The Crew finished the match with nine men after Joseph Ngwenya was ejected in the 20th minute and Marcos Gonzalez in 71st. The Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men when Mike Magee was red-carded for a hand to the face of Kei Kamara in the 64th, three minutes after he entered the game.

The victory was only the Red Bulls’ second in their past seven league games, but kept New York unbeaten in eight at home. The loss was Columbus’ fifth in its past seven games and left it with the worst record in Major League Soccer.

Real Salt Lake 3, FC Dallas 2 at Salt Lake City: Jason Kreis scored his MLS record 107th goal to cap off a second-half rally for Real Salt Lake and keep its playoff hopes alive with a victory over FC Dallas.

The loss denied FC Dallas a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs for the second straight game.

Kreis pushed the ball in the net while falling backward to put Real Salt Lake up 3-2 in the 72nd minute. It broke a 10-game scoreless streak for the veteran forward.

Carlos Ruiz gave FC Dallas a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, scoring off a cross from midfielder Ronnie O’Brien. Ruiz struck again near the end of the half during stoppage time, sliding past Eddie Pope to put FC Dallas up 2-1. Ruiz’s two goals in the first half broke an 11-game scoreless streak for the forward.

Real Salt Lake evened it 1-1 in the 14th minute on a goal from midfielder Andy Williams.

Chris Klein tied the game in the 62nd minute when he took a pass from Williams and sent the ball inside the far post.
