Two-time Olympian Alan Culpepper of Lafayette will run the half-marathon, staged in conjunction with the Denver Marathon on Oct. 15, race officials will announce today.

Culpepper is focused on the New York City Marathon on Nov. 5, but sees the Denver half as a great tuneup.

“Everything is building toward the New York City Marathon,” said Culpepper, who ran the marathon at the Athens Olympics. “Three weeks out, having a half-marathon where I don’t have to travel, where I get a nice fitness test and a racing stimulus will be a big benefit for New York.”

Culpepper finished a disappointing eighth in the New York City Half Marathon on Aug. 29 while recovering from anemia.

“Since then,” Culpepper said, “I’ve been feeling better and better and better.”

Race officials say 1,200 have registered for the marathon, another 1,200 for the half.
