BECAUSE YOU ASKED
Q: Long ago, I heard a discussion on the radio about the proper pronunciation of Ken Caryl Road and Ranch. I can’t remember the outcome of the discussion, but I know it is named for the land owners’ two children. I forgot whether they were two boys or a boy and girl. Is it pronounced “Carl” or “Carol”?
A: John Shaffer, who bought the land in 1914, had two sons, Kent and Carroll. He named the land Ken Caryl after his two sons, but it is unclear at what point or why the spelling of the names was changed. The name “Caryl” is pronounced “Carroll.”
Shaffer’s original purchase was 3,500 acres, but he continued to acquire more land over the years and kept the name Ken Caryl for all of the property. The land was sold several times over the years until Johns Manville bought it in 1970 and developed it.
Today, Ken Caryl Ranch, which is in the southwest metro area, consists of 9,100 acres.

Q: When is the construction on Interstate 225 ever going to be finished? They still need to widen from Parker Road north and Sixth Avenue south. When will that happen?
A: There is not a time frame yet because the necessary funding is not available and the environmental study for FasTracks needs to be completed before work can proceed.
There was a federal earmark of about $11 million to start to improve the corridor, but that is not enough to address all of the capacity issues. The Denver Regional Council of Governments, the Regional Transportation District and the Colorado Department of Transportation are working together to determine how to best spend the limited funds that are available for the corridor.
