Getting your player ready...

So you’re thinking the Patriots aren’t the Patriots anymore. You’re thinking injuries, the salary cap and Bill Belichick’s wardrobe have caught up with them.

You might be right.

We’ll have a better feel today after the three-time Super Bowl champs play the big, bad Bengals at Cincinnati, a game that ranks among the headliners on the Week 4 dance card.

Interesting how these things work. While Tom Brady and his teammates are bemoaning the loss of wideout Deion Branch, the Seahawks need Branch to step up at Chicago in the absence of league MVP Shaun Alexander, out with a broken bone in his foot.

Which brings us to today’s other headliner: San Diego at Baltimore. The Chargers, coming off a bye, have the league’s second-ranked running game. That’s subject to change today, what with the unbeaten Ravens leading the league in run defense. Now for the asterisk on their season: The Ravens have beaten three teams – Cleveland, Oakland and Tennessee – that have yet to win a game.
