Ogden, Utah – Shawn Woods passed for two touchdowns and 177 yards in Weber State’s 26-21 victory over Northern Colorado in a nationally televised Big Sky Conference game Thursday night at Stewart Stadium.
Trevyn Smith rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown for the second time this season.
The Wildcats (2-3, 1-1) held off a second-half charge from Northern Colorado. UNC (1-4, 0-2) scored three touchdowns in the second half. The final from Andre Wilson with less than three minutes remaining cut the deficit to just five.
The Bears recovered their onside kick on the next play, but were unable to gain a first down.
Weber State had 359 yards of total offense, a breakthrough for the Wildcats who averaged just 10 points a game before Thursday. Northern Colorado finished with 329.
WSU scored a pair of early touchdowns – on a 26-yard run by Marky Filipe and a 76-yard catch by Tim Toone – to take a 12-0 lead in the first. Both touchdowns were the result of UNC turnovers.
Bryant Eteuati added to the lead just before the half, with a 33-yard touchdown catch.
The Bears got on the board in the third quarter, when Patrick Ealy ran for a 27-yards on a fourth-and-1. They added another touchdown on a 3-yard run by quarterback Dominic Breazeale in the fourth.
Wilson led the Bears with 135 yards rushing on 29 carries. Weber State’s Smith ran for 151 yards on 20 carries.
UNC now drops to the bottom of the Big Sky Conference after joining Division 1-AA before the season. Three other teams – Idaho State, Sacramento State and Montana State – are also winless in the conference.
