Field, stream and shop

For a lot of guys, clothes shopping isn’t exactly considered a manly pursuit. But grown-up boys who like hunting, hiking and hanging out in damp bogs spotting rare birds might well enjoy a foray into C.C. Filson, a store designed to keep them looking stylish in the fields and streams they love. The upscale store (we won’t call it a boutique, guys) carries a select line of flannel shirts, weather-beating jackets, do-it-all coveralls and the like, and has a particularly attractive line of travel and work bags. It’s located at 200 Filmore St. 303-316-4406

Mayhem among the malls

Suburban Legends: True Tales of Murder, Mayhem and Minivans, by Sam Stall (Quirk Books, $15.95)

People have been digging up the countryside to plunk down subdivisions and strip malls and migrating to the suburbs, presumably to escape the depravity and gruesome crime in the big city. That’s why when something depraved or gruesome happens in the ‘burbs, we like to act surprised. Author Sam Stall is out to dispel that myth. Stall, an Indiana suburbanite, has collected and recounted 60 true tales from the land of picket fences, from a haunted McDonald’s in Lewiston, N.Y., to the picture-perfect Columbus, Ohio, soccer mom who had this pesky murder in her past, to Colorado’s own Marvin Heemeyer, who exacted his revenge on the good people of Granby with a bulldozer in 2004. “Never antagonize someone who has a short fuse, a long memory and a big bulldozer,” Stall writes.

Click and a wine pick

Picking the wine can be the hardest part of throwing a dinner party. What will impress the guests – and match the multicourse meal perfectly? The new online wine store Colorado Cellar Consulting tries to make it easy by not providing too many choices. Instead of letting you choose from a large selection, they choose for you, editing their offerings to a small number of recommended whites, reds and sparklings. It’s a project of Alan Manley, who ran the former Primitivo Wine Bar in Colorado Springs. Go to ccconlinewine.com
