Colorado Rapids midfielder Clint Mathis was suspended Wednesday for two games for failing to leave the field in an orderly fashion after getting a red card in a 3-1 loss to New England last Saturday.
Mathis also was fined $1,000 by Major League Soccer for elbowing Revolution defender Avery John in the jaw, the action that drew the red card, and then arguing with officials instead of leaving the field.
A red card carries an automatic one-game suspension and a $250 fine. Mathis’ punishment was increased after a disciplinary committee reviewed his actions.
Mathis will serve the first game of the suspension when the Rapids play the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. He also will sit out Colorado’s final regular-season game, against the Houston Dynamo on Oct. 14.

Also signed to one-year contracts were forwards Gary Bining, the 13th pick overall in the Sept. 13 NLL draft, Jamie Shewchuk (25th), Matt Poskay (34th) and defenseman Casey Cittadino (64th).
