JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.-

A state lawmaker stationed in Iraq was wounded by a sniper, the governor’s office and lawmakers said Friday.

An e-mail sent by state Rep. Susan Phillips to others at the Capitol said Rep. Jason Brown was shot in the lung in the recent attack. There was no immediate word on how seriously Brown was hurt, or exactly when and where in Iraq he was shot; a news conference was planned Friday afternoon.

In a statement, Gov. Matt Blunt offered prayers and called Brown “a true patriot and a friend.”

Brown, a staff sergeant in the Army Reserve, was deployed in March for a one-year tour and has been serving as a civil affairs specialist, helping build roads, bridges, hospitals and schools. In 2000 he served in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Brown, a Platte City Republican, was first elected in 2002 to represent the state House district just north of Kansas City.

A message left for Army officials in the Washington, D.C., area was not immediately returned.
