Getting your player ready...

I have an advance copy of next month’s Esquire – which has good news and sad news for Colorado readers.

The sad is the replacement of Boulder babe Jessica Biel as Sexiest Woman Alive by Scarlett Johansson. Well, it’s not a bad trade-off.

Then we get to John Mariani’s annual Best New Restaurants roster. Mariani is known for touring the country, often on the cuff, checking out the hot new joints in dozens of cities.

No Colorado restaurants make the “best” list this year. But we don’t go unnoticed.

Summit at the Broadmoor was lobbying for the list, but it comes in with a nod for “Best New Design.” And Adam Tihany’s vision at this casual, elegant spot is deliciously eye-popping. Mariani likes the food too – with half his copy praising chef Bertrand Bouquin’s grub. “It’s a joy to sit at Summit in view of all that natural grandeur, which is about the only thing that could distract you from all the goodness on your plate.”

Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson at Frasca in Boulder is one of Four Chefs to Watch. “Wholly committed to exalting the food of Italy’s Friuli region, Mackinnon-Patterson does it with such personal style that he has made Boulder worth a drive up from Denver.”

Amen.

I’ve recently dined at both restaurants, and I’m still smacking my lips.

Mooooooving on

The Cow Parade is winding down after a three-month run. You’ve seen the painted fiberglass bovines on the 16th Street Mall, and at Denver Pavilions, Larimer Square, Tabor Center, Writer Square, Cherry Creek and Stapleton. On Oct. 19, all 100 cows will head to Stapleton so you can see them all together.

There were a few rough spots over the summer. Someone stole the helmet from John Lynch’s “BronCow” – and despite a whopping $100 reward, it’s still missing. Someone wrecked the orange bench-cow in Cherry Creek North, but it was quickly repaired. Other cows were “just loved too much,” says cow mouthpiece Z.J. Czupor. People sat on them, hugged them, touched them, rubbed them – and hurt them. A crew went out twice-a-week to repair and touch-up mutilated cows.

The herd will move Nov. 16 to the National Western Stock Show Stadium to be auctioned off to benefit various local charities.

So long cows!

Warmth

A tip of the hat and tug on the coat sleeve to Warren and Steve “Toltzy” Toltz at Dependable Cleaners. Their Coats for Colorado drive celebrates 25 years in the winter-warmth business this month. Last year, they collected 77,000 coats. Over the years they have collected and handed out more than 1.5 million. That translates into some saved lives.
