The Nuggets exercised their option on the contract of head coach George Karl today, agreeing to three more seasons at $9 million total. Karl is now under contract through the 2009-10 season.
“We feel this is a very good day for the Nuggets organization,” said team owner Stan Kroenke in a statement released by the team. “As we’ve said all along, we’re committed to building a championship-caliber team. The cornerstone of all championship teams is excellent coaches and players, and a passionate fan base. We believe today’s announcement, coupled with the moves we’ve made throughout the offseason will take us closer to achieving our ultimate goal.”
Karl has a 76-46 record with the Nuggets after taking over in January, 2005.
“I really want to thank Mr. Kroenke for making this commitment,” said Karl in a statement released by the team. “This franchise is moving in a great direction and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
Karl has 784 victories, tied for 12th best in NBA history.
