SAN DIEGO-

Seven people were trapped in a border tunnel Tuesday, apparently as they tried to cross from Mexico into the United States, according to fire department officials who were trying to rescue them.

Firefighters were sent to the area where San Diego meets Tijuana after Border Patrol agents notified them shortly after 7 a.m. that several people were trapped in a cross-border tunnel, said Candice Cook, a fire dispatcher with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Two were freed within two hours and none needed medical attention, according to Cook.

“There were seven, two are out,” she said. “We don’t even know how they got trapped.”

Cook didn’t know precisely where the people were trapped but said firefighters from Tijuana and San Diego were working at both ends of the tunnel. She had no other details.
