The third UNC football player to be arrested this season has bonded out of jail, charged with assaulting a man Sunday morning.

Backup fullback Garrett Bliss was arrested in Evans after police say he admitted to beating a man outside the Crescent Cove Apartments in Evans.

Bliss told police he was upset because of text messages he had found on his girlfriend’s phone. Bliss went to the victim’s apartment complex with friends, who lured the victim outside, police said. Bliss allegedly attacked him in the parking lot, police said.

Police arrested him a few hours later. Bliss posted $7,500 bail Sunday afternoon. A court date has not been set. A spokesman for UNC said they are investigating the incident and have not taken any action.

Last month, UNC punter Rafael Mendoza was stabbed, and backup punter Mitch Cozad was arrested for his alleged involvement. Cozad was suspended from school but has yet to be charged criminally.

Last week, UNC senior co-captain Jacob Carlson, a defensive lineman, was cited for disorderly conduct for his involvement in a fight at Jackson’s All American Sports Grill in Greeley. Carlson, 23, was suspended from the football team and is expected to have surgery today on his orbital bone around his left eye.

Bliss played in four games this season. He came to UNC two years ago from the University of Wyoming, where he spent the 2004 season as a redshirt for former UNC head coach Joe Glenn. He started eight games for UNC last season, scoring a touchdown against UC Davis.
