University of Denver hockey player J.D. Corbin is scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair ligaments in his right ankle. Corbin, a senior wing from Littleton, also fractured his right fibula in a collision with the end boards during practice on Monday. Corbin, a NHL draftee of the Avalanche, will be unavailable until “the second half of the season,” DU spokesman Erich Bacher said. – Mike Chambers
Rocky Mountain Rage signs right wing
The Rocky Mountain Rage signed John DiPace, a right wing who spent the past three seasons in the United Hockey League. Last season for the Richmond Riverdogs, he had 67 points in 74 games, scoring 31 goals and adding 36 assists, with 224 penalty minutes.
The Rage also placed forwards Steve Devine, Jesse Moe and Caleb Moffat and defenseman Jon Hutcheon on waivers, and named defenseman and assistant coach Dan Vandermeer as team captain.
Ft. Lewis, CSU-Pueblo soccer players honored
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference named Fort Lewis soccer player John Cunliffe the offensive player of the week and David Winchell from CSU-Pueblo the defensive player of the week.
Cunliffe scored two game-winning goals as Fort Lewis beat Colorado Mines 3-2 and Colorado Christian 1-0 and won a third straight RMAC title.
Winchell made six saves and allowed only one goal in two games last week: a 3-0 victory against Regis and a 1-0 loss to Metro State.
For the women, Fort Lewis’ Bree Baker was named the defensive player of the week, and Metro State’s Kira Sharp earned offensive honors.
Baker had 11 saves in two games last week, recording her seventh and eighth shutouts of the season. Sharp led Metro to three victories: a 3-0 win over Incarnate Word, 4-0 over Colorado Christian 4-0 and 3-0 against Colorado Mines. She had four goals and two assists.
