This old grizzly, immortalized in bronze in a central Colorado town, has a great story that Denver Post theater critic John Moore was only too happy to share with us. What do you know about this storied, three-toed bear? Tell us a bit about him, and where he stands, in an e-mail to ColoradoSunday@denverpost.com. Include a digital photo of yourself, and don’t forget to include your hometown in the message. Our favorite wins a $50 gas card.
How’d you know?
Last week: Clock house, Golden Gate Canyon Road
THE WINNERS: Sandra DePew and Scott Latorra, Gilpin County
My co-worker, Scott Latorra, and I both drive by this home, to and from work. It is located on Colorado 46, on the way to Golden Gate Canyon State Park. We have often mentioned to each other that we check the clock that is pictured against our own clocks to make sure we have the same time – especially if we are running late. We also believe that the pictured clock keeps better time. We are hoping the next addition the homeowner puts up will be a giant thermometer, so that we can have the outside temperature on our way to work.
A LITTLE SPITE: Jack and Karen Berryhill, Golden
The “Clock House” is located at the corner of Smith Hill Road and Golden Gate Canyon Road (Colorado 46) in Gilpin County. The house has been under construction for a number of years, but is unoccupied. The clock face was added within the past year, reportedly as a “spite” to neighbors across the road with whom the builder had a dispute and who now have a constant reminder that “time is running.” Karen and I are building a new house a couple of miles up Smith Hill Road. Directions to our home are now made easier because we can tell visitors to “turn off Golden Gate Canyon at the Clock”!
FUTURE RETREAT: Diane Merker and Tim Eaton, Boulder
The owner of this tower is an old friend and a compulsive builder! The tower is being fitted out as a future retreat with kitchen, bedroom and livingroom, all on separate floors. He went to great lengths to order the large clock from back East.
A WING AT A TIME: Sue Hensler, Dolores
We sometimes drive over Smith Hill Road as a shortcut to miss the Black Hawk traffic, and we’ve watched this house grow one wing at a time! When the clock was added, we couldn’t help wondering if the owner was saying “it’s time for me to get this place finished”!
