Best meal: Cafe Traditional de Uruapan. Beautiful wood-detailed interior. Reasonable prices, offering food, liquor, coffees and herbal teas. Order enchiladas suizas.

Best deal: Hotel el Tarasco. Beautifully decorated with hand-carved figurines, doorways and furniture. Excellent food and a swimming pool – and only $45 per person.

Best time to go: August for the guitar fair. Don’t leave home without an umbrella; it’s the rainy season and can rain 4-6 inches in a few hours. Otherwise it’s sunny and nice.

Best travel tip: The Guitar Fair is a week-long celebration of music by artists of international acclaim, with dance, markets and exhibitions of some of the world’s finest guitars made by many of the town’s highly skilled luthiers.
