Colorado running back Mell Holliday’s quest to identify a sliver of daylight
between hulking defensive tackles may actually be one of the easier
challenges going in collegiate athletics right now.
A tougher one: explaining to Congress why the organization that represents
college sports should continue to get tax breaks.
It s an issue that s in play right now as U.S. House Ways and Means
Committee chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) asks some pretty tough questions
of the National Collegiate Athletics Association.
In a letter republished by USA Today earlier this month, Thomas all but
clotheslined the NCAA with some probing questions about the way big-time
college sports work – and whether they truly do serve an educational mission
that supplies the foundation for their tax-exempt status.
