Who: Peg and Marty Gorce of Boulder with the Mocko Jumbie Dancers of St. Croix

Where: The Guests’ Reception at the Buccaneer Hotel and Resort, St. Croix

Best meal: While many restaurants around Christiansted, the capital of St. Croix, serve excellent Caribbean cuisine, Duggan’s Reef, about 5 miles east of Christiansted, serves the local catch of the day, lobster from the reef of the same name, in an Irish whiskey sauce or in a Caribbean pasta. This restaurant is situated on the reef’s beach and has magnificent views of Buck Island National Park and Caribbean sunsets.

Best deal: The Buccaneer Hotel and Resort offers its summer rates, a reduction of at least 25 percent from the winter rates, after April 17. Rates include a full American breakfast buffet, the use of snorkeling gear and kayaks on two of its three beaches, the opportunity to swim in one of two outdoor pools, and access to one of the best golf courses and some of the finest tennis courts in the Caribbean.

Best time to go: Since hotel rates and shopping prices are reduced around the middle of April and the hurricane season doesn’t officially start until June, May is a picturesque and quieter time on the island.

Best travel tip: Along with very good sun protection, purchase protection from the biting, itching and scratching of the no-see-ums that abound on St. Croix’s beaches.
