President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney plan to be in Colorado today to make a final push for Republicans before Tuesday’s election.
The visits underscore the expanding competitive playing field the GOP faces in the midterm elections. Rather than stumping on Democratic turf, the president is visiting a state that he carried in the last presidential election.
He and Cheney are coming to shore up the 4th and 5th Congressional Districts, both normally considered safe because of the Republicans’ voter registration advantage.
Bush is to arrive this evening at Buckley Air Force Base, where he will present a volunteer service award to Puddy Seccombe of Save Our Youth, a mentoring program for urban youths. Seccombe also is a volunteer with CP of Colorado, a local organization that benefits children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
Bush plans to give his Saturday morning radio address live from Englewood before heading to Greeley for a campaign rally with GOP gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez and 4th Congressional District incumbent Marilyn Musgrave, who is facing a challenge from Democrat Angie Paccione.
Cheney is set to campaign today for Republican Doug Lamborn, who is battling Democrat Jay Fawcett for the seat being vacated by Joel Hefley.
He will also attend a welcome- home rally with troops at Fort Carson’s Butts Army Airfield and speak to a rally at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs before leaving Saturday morning.
