The Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League took advantage of the Rocky Mountain Rage’s short bench for a 3-2 victory Sunday at DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss.
Memphis’ Ryan Campbell scored the game-winner with 8.5 seconds remaining and ended Rocky Mountain’s (1-3-2) six-game road swing to begin the season.
The Rage’s Anders Strome scored at the 8:09 mark of the first period, his sixth goal of the season, tying the game 1-1. The Rage killed off Memphis’ first nine power plays.
But the Rage had just 13 skaters on its bench after defenseman Sheldon Lee left the game in the second period with a broken collarbone, joining three other players who are inactive because of injuries.
The Kings (5-1-2) stayed atop the Northeast Division. The Rage will play their home opener Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers at the Broomfield Event Center.
New Orleans volleyball team edges DU
The University of New Orleans volleyball team snapped the University of Denver’s nine-match winning streak with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Pioneers in a Sun Belt Conference match.
New Orleans (21-8, 10-5 SBC) held off a DU (19-10, 12-5) rally, winning 30-24, 30-23, 27-30, 27-30, 15-13.
Denver ends its regular season on Saturday against host North Texas. The Pioneers and New Orleans are tied atop the SBC West Division standings with the conference tournament set to begin Nov. 15 in Denton, Texas.
DU’s Kienle-Rosen duo wins tournament
Denver’s Timo Kienle and Kalle Rosen finished undefeated to win the men’s tennis doubles title at the Southern Cal Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles.
Kienle and Rosen defeated UCLA’s Mike Look and Chris Surapol 8-6 in the title match. Earlier, the tandem downed Azusa Pacific’s Patrick Kur and Mathias Weber 8-6 in the semifinals.
