STATEWIDE – Turn your eyes to the sky Wednesday, to watch planet Mercury make a slow-motion transit of the sun midday.

It will take about 5 hours for Mercury to cross the disc of the sun, scientists predict, and the event should not be observed with unprotected eyes.

During the transit, predicted to start at 12:12 p.m., Mercury will appear as a small black dot against the surface of the sun.

Viewers can observe the event safely at Denver and Boulder observatories: The University of Denver’s Chamberlin Observatory will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday. In Boulder, the University of Colorado’s Sommers-Bausch Observatory will host a free open house from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
