Colorado Springs – The stench of dirty politics in the 5th Congressional race took on a whole new smell Tuesday when workers for Democrat Jay Fawcett arrived at work to what smelled like a skunk.

Colorado Springs police are investigating the incident at Fawcett’s headquarters near downtown.

“The smell was obvious, it smelled like something somebody sprayed out there, outside of the building,” said Colorado Springs Police Lt. Rafael Cintron. “In addition to that, some of the staff advised that they had received an e-mail about 7 p.m. last night and in the subject line, it said, ‘Eat (expletive) and die.”‘

Cintron said police are investigating the case as “suspicious circumstances” but they do not consider the e-mail a death threat.

The Fawcett campaign was expecting about 200 workers to volunteer Tuesday to help get out the vote.
