Who: Justin Garoutte of Antonito and Kie Riedel of Denver

Where: Sahara Desert south of Douz

Best meal: Try any of the many couscous dishes, the national meal of Tunisia, but beware – unlike other North African cuisine, Tunisian food is spicy hot. Also be sure not to miss the mint tea found at any cafe.

Best deal: Carpet shopping in Kairouan, the oldest and most renowned carpet center in Tunisia. On arrival in a store you will be shown incredible customer service and will probably enjoy free mint tea and pastries. With good bargaining skills you can buy a handmade camel, wool or silk carpet for less than a quarter of the price you would pay in the United States.

Best time to go: Spring months before temperatures, especially in the Sahara, get too hot.

Best travel tip: Take a scarf to cover the head for women in order to enter the mosques.
