Denver International Airport passenger traffic jumped 16.1 percent in September compared with the same month a year ago, spurred on by heavy airline competition.

More than 4 million passengers used DIA in September, the 17th month in a row of monthly passenger records at the airport and the first time September traffic has topped 4 million. In September 2005, nearly 3.5 million passengers used the airport.

For the year through September, passenger traffic has been up 10.4 percent. If that growth rate continues, DIA will be on track to set an annual record of nearly 48 million travelers, up from about 43.4 million last year.

“We’ve been saying for some time that the competition among airlines at DIA has resulted in relatively low fares, and that’s what is spurring the phenomenal traffic growth,” said DIA manager Turner West in a written statement.
