In 1903, the Longmont Sugar Factory was built, but was soon renamed the Great Western Sugar factory. It played a vital role in the development of the area.
In 1908, the Longmont High School “Beetdiggers” became the “World Champion Interscholastic Football Team,” beating Chicago’s Englewood High in a Christmas Day game in Denver.
From 1941-1945, the Great Western Sugar dormitory at Third Avenue and Kimbark Street in Longmont was converted to house Italian and German prisoners of war who worked on area farms.
In 1977, the Great Western Sugar factory in Longmont closed, the last major agriculture-based industry in the city.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY
Top-shelf library in U.S. rankings
“We’re No. 5.”
That’s the cry from the Arapahoe Library System, which ranked fifth best out of 300 similar-sized operations throughout the country this year.
The rankings were reported in Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings 2006, which were released this fall and published in the November issue of American Libraries magazine.
The Arapahoe system moved up from No. 10 last year.
The Hennen ranking also shows that Colorado ranks sixth-best in library systems throughout the country.
The Hennen scale rates libraries in several categories, including circulation, staffing, materials and hours of operation.
JEFFERSON COUNTY
High court public event
The Colorado Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in two cases from from 9-11 a.m. at D’Evelyn High School, 10359 W. Nassau Drive in south Jefferson County.
There will be a limited number of seats for the public at the event, which is an educational outreach program of the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.
A three-judge panel will hear arguments in one case that stems from an automobile accident and another about a licensed hunter’s convictions for illegally abandoning a mountain goat carcass.
