Buy a permit now, then on the first weekend in December, grab a handsaw, a thermos of hot chocolate and some sandwiches for sustenance and cut down your tree for the holidays. Contact the visitor center (303-582-3707) for more information about cutting location, times and vehicle rules.

Candy Cane Fest

Hammond’s Candies Factory | 5735 Washington St., Inter-state 25 and 58th Avenue, Denver | 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 2 and 9; call 303-333-5588.

Tour the factory, play candy bingo, decorate gingerbread cookies and ride the train at the annual festival. Hammond’s has been in operation since 1920 and is famous for its flavorful ribbons, luscious chocolates and seasonal specialties, including candy “coal.” Santa and his reindeer, carollers and storytellers also will be there. Travelers might be serenaded by a classical flutist, watch a dance traditional to the countries of Ireland, Spain or Italy, or hear some of the finest Gospel music or songs of regional school choirs. Sixteen years ago, the former Stapleton International Airport was the first to introduce a performance series, and the program has become a model for airports throughout the country.

Fabulous fibers

Thousands of hand-crafted items will be on display from local weavers, beaders, basket-makers, doll-makers, quilters, paper-makers, clothing designers and spinners. A public reception and silent auction to benefit the guild’s scholarship program is 5-8 p.m. Dec. 1. Other events include a fashion show Dec. 2 at 1 p.m., weaving and spinning demonstrations and a juried art exhibit.
