Two boys died after they were struck while apparently walking home from school by an SUV that veered off of South Federal Boulevard and onto a sidewalk Friday afternoon, officials say.

The 64-year-old female driver was also seriously injured in the accident after the SUV struck a tree, police say.

One of the boys was 14 and the age of the other student is unknown, said Virginia Quiñones, Denver police spokeswoman.

The boys apparently were walking home from school along South Federal Boulevard near West Colorado Avenue at 2:20 p.m. Friday when they were struck from behind, Quiñones said.

Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman, declined to identify the woman before the traffic report was completed.

He also did not release the names of the two boys pending notification of their families.

The investigation did not reveal that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, but Quiñones said that police are not ruling it out.

“It certainly will be one thing they’ll be looking at to determine why the driver swerved as she did,” she said.
