Boulder – Boulder Daily Camera managing editor Kevin Kaufman will succeed Sue Deans as editor, the newspaper announced Sunday.
“Kevin has proven himself to be a great leader with exceptional vision and news judgment,” Daily Camera publisher Al Manzi said. “He has been one of the leaders in the development of the website, leading the way to tremendous readership growth over the past several years.”
Deans announced last month that she was taking a brief leave. She said she would return to the newspaper in January as a writer and would work on special projects.
“When Sue Deans decided to change her role, the decision on who should replace Sue was obvious,” Manzi said. “Kevin has the respect of the staff of the entire newspaper.”
Kaufman, 50, a Littleton native with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Colorado State University, has worked at the Camera for 12 years, serving as city editor most of the period. Last year, he was named managing editor.
The Navy veteran previously worked for the Pekin (Ill.) Daily Times and the Northwest Colorado Daily Press in Craig.
Kaufman, who lives in Louisville with his wife, Deanna, and their two daughters, said: “The Daily Camera has a long tradition of excellent journalism, and I’m honored and humbled to be named editor. I look forward to working with the Camera’s top-notch staff, area leaders and the community to make the Daily Camera and its related products the pre-eminent sources of local news and information.”
