A disabled woman walking across South Santa Fe Drive early this morning was struck and killed by a driver who never saw her, Littleton police said.
The woman, Vickie May Oakgrove, 45, crossed Santa Fe at Chenango walking eastbound with a cane, dressed in dark clothing and a dark backpack. She was in a legal crosswalk but the intersection has no signal light. The speed limit there is 45 mph.
A northbound driver struck her just at roughly 5:45 a.m., while it was still dark, police said. “There were no brake marks on the road,” said spokesman Sgt. Sean Dugan, who added that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor.
Dugan said the district attorney will review the case because of state law that gives a pedestrian in a cross walk the legal right-of-way.
The investigation will determine if excessive speed was a factor, whether the driver had his headlights on, and if other circumstances could have contributed to the accident.
Oakgrove was transported to Swedish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:14 a.m., Dugan said.
