Sony Corp., plagued this year by production glitches which delayed shipments of game consoles and forced the recall of 9.6 million laptop computer batteries, said it found defects in eight of its Cyber-shot digital camera models.

The compact cameras may have trouble taking photos and pictures may be distorted on the display screen, Tokyo-based Sony said in a statement on its Web site. The problems are similar to those that affected 20 models produced by Sony, the world’s second-largest digital camera maker, last year.

The affected cameras account for about 0.4 percent of Sony’s digital camera sales in Japan, spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa said. The company will repair any affected cameras for free.

Sony, creator of the Walkman, has struggled this year to maintain the quality of its consumer products after component shortages and glitches in its flagship PlayStation 3 game console resulted in delays and scaled-back plans for the product. It is spending $440 million replacing batteries in laptops in the biggest recall in consumer electronics history.

Sony, the world’s second-largest consumer-electronics maker, last month forecast its lowest annual profit in five years.

The company’s stock has declined 4.6 percent this year, compared with a 2.4 percent decline in the Nikkei-225 Stock Average.
