A topheavy SUV carrying eight students from Lincoln High School missed a turn onto Morrison Road this afternoon and rolled over, police said.
All eight students were transported by ambulances to St. Anthony’s Central and Porter Adventist hospitals, where they were treated for injuries. None of the students had life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The black and gold, four-door Chevrolet Tahoe was headed northbound on South Sheridan Boulevard when it attempted to turn north onto Morrison Road, said an eyewitness.
“He just whipped it around the corner way too fast, started to skid, then overcorrected it and rolled over,” said Mike Bulger, an Xcel Energy employee who was headed south on Morrison Road when the SUV rolled to a stop in front of him.
“One girl climbed out of the window and looked right at me before she collapsed on the roadway,” he said. “The other kids started crawling out of the windows crying and screaming. They were shook up pretty bad.”
Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said officers were investigating whether the SUV was speeding.
“I was surprised the driver wasn’t killed,” Bulger said. “The driver’s side was smashed in real good. There were boxes and boxes of CDs and DVDs everywhere in the road.”
