A van carrying 14 suspected illegal immigrants rolled off a snowy highway in Idaho Springs this afternoon, killing four.
The driver fled the scene on foot and sheriff’s deputies brought in search dogs to find him, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The 1998 Dodge Mini van was headed eastbound on Interstate 70 when the driver lost control on a snowpacked curve, hit a tree and rolled over. Three adult males and one adult female were pronounced dead at the scene.
The survivors, 9 males and 1 female including 1 child, were transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver, where officials said none of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
The highway was closed at mid-afternoon with traffic being diverted through Idaho Springs.
