Skiing on Mount Mansfield dates back to the early 20th century. According to archival material on Stowe’s Web site, , in 1914 a Dartmouth College librarian named Nathaniel Goodrich was the first person to ski from the summit of Mansfield, using a carriage road.
In the 1930s, lifts came to Mansfield and the Civilian Conservation Corps created a world-class ski run out of a trail known as the Nose Dive. In the late 1930s and ’40s, numerous ski races were held there, including the 1938 national downhill ski championship. A ski school opened at Stowe in 1936, and Stowe also claims credit for being home to the first organized Ski Patrol in the U.S. in 1934, the Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol.
