Sandy, Utah – Utah’s largest school district expects to have 25,000 more students in the next decade, forcing it to raise as much as $750 million in bonds for buildings and stirring concerns that Jordan may be getting too big.
With enrollment projected to hit nearly 104,000 by 2016, the district will need to build 26 schools and remodel 39, officials said Wednesday at a public meeting to discuss growth.
Located in southern Salt Lake County, the district has steadily grown for the past 25 years as housing has boomed.
Sandy, Draper, Cottonwood Heights, Midvale and Alta have joined with Salt Lake County to study breaking away and forming a new district.
If bonds are sold and the Jordan district remains intact, property owners over time would pay an additional $130 to $169 a year, per $100,000 of market value.
